Trump Keeps Noem on in New Position as National Training Director for Iditarod

In a move that shocked Democrats, Republicans, and the Alaskan sled dog community, President Trump announced today that former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem will stay a key part of his team, this time in the newly created role of National Training Director for the Iditarod.  “Kristi has shown she’s not afraid to make tough calls with dogs,” Trump said, referencing the governor’s now-infamous admission that she shot her own dog for underperformance.  “Frankly, that’s the kind of leadership these huskies need.  We’re not running a doggy daycare here.”

Noem, who has never been to Alaska but once saw “Snow Dogs” on cable, wasted no time outlining her plans to bring “South Dakota values” to the storied race.  “We have to get these dogs ready to win, or at least not to embarrass us on the world stage,” she said at a press conference held at an abandoned PetSmart in Nome.  “If a lead dog isn’t pulling its weight, I’m not saying I’d do anything drastic right away.  But you have to let them know—there are consequences.  Sometimes, tough love means, well… you know.” She then winked at a visibly nervous musher.

Veteran Iditarod trainers voiced concerns about Noem’s approach.  “Usually, if a dog’s not feeling it, we let them rest or maybe give them extra treats,” said longtime musher Pete Sorenson.  “I’ve never seen a training manual that suggests a .22.” Still, Trump was quick to defend his choice, insisting that Noem’s “unmatched decisiveness” was exactly what the sport needed. “We’ve never seen dog discipline like this, folks.  It’s tremendous.  The best.  She’s going to get those dogs moving one way or another.”

Asked whether he would consider owning a sled dog team himself, Trump was definitive.  “Absolutely not.  I’m happy to say that I do not own a dog, have never owned one, and after hearing Kristi’s story, I might never even pet one again.  I don’t need that kind of stress.  The only thing I want pulling me is my golf cart.

Meanwhile, animal rights groups are already preparing statements, while Iditarod organizers hurriedly updated their FAQ pages to clarify that “managerial discipline” does not include firearms.
