April 2026 Risible Award: Congress Earns Its Clown Shoes—Again

It’s hard to pick just one low point in American politics these days, but the recurring circus in Congress—where a routine government funding bill once again became a battleground—deserves a special prize. Historically, both parties have used shutdown threats as leverage, and this time is no different. The result? It’s not lawmakers who feel the pinch. It’s the rest of us, and especially the hard-working men and women at our airports and those managing our disasters, who once again take a hit. How about we implement a “5 Things Weekly” email for the Senate and Congress? Realistically, it could be a “1 Thing Weekly” email, and it would still have no content.

Let’s talk about the Democrats first. Their big stand this time? Refusing to fund the Department of Homeland Security, supposedly to protest ICE’s abuses. On paper, that’s about values. In reality, it’s tens of thousands of regular people—TSA agents, FEMA responders, border staff—forced to wonder how they’ll pay their bills. These aren’t faceless bureaucrats. They’re the folks making sure airports run, and disasters don’t become catastrophes.

Then came the Senate’s so-called “grand bargain.” After several weeks of negotiations, senators reached a deal to reopen DHS, a precedent in past standoffs. But the Republican-led House rejected it, saying it wasn’t tough enough on immigration. The result is that federal workers’ paychecks become bargaining chips while politicians perform for their audiences.

This is the same tired script every time: Congress keeps its paychecks flowing while the rest of us get played. TSA agents keep showing up. FEMA teams stay ready for the next hurricane or wildfire. But lawmakers? They’re on cable news, blaming “the other side,” always on time for their own direct deposit.

Ask yourself—what if the tables were turned? If Congress failed to pass a budget every time, would their own paychecks stop? How many of these self-righteous taxpayer grifters would survive a month without their six-figure salary or their perks? They wouldn’t last a week. Most are still paying off campaign debts. The minute their own rent checks bounced, you’d see compromise happen at warp speed.

Let’s call this what it is: embarrassing. It’s a recurring issue: both parties prioritize public confrontation over compromise. Meanwhile, federal employees who keep this country running face uncertainty due to these standoffs.

Maybe next time there’s a standoff, Congress should be the first to miss a paycheck. Maybe then we’d see less reality-TV politics and more actual governing. Until that happens, both parties are to blame for this political clown car. Get your asses back to Washington, you don’t deserve a break, and do what you’re paid to do-solve problems for the American people.

Love,
